You’ve seen gold dipped rock candy but have you ever seen rainbow rock candy? I am so happy to be sharing my Original Rainbow Rock Candy Party Food Tutorial with you today! Perfect for unicorn parties that are all the rage right now. Keep reading to find out how you can make them for your next party.

I have said many times before I love themed food ideas. When coming up with ideas for a unicorn photo shoot I put together for Birthday in a Box it hit me that if you snip the stick off rock candy it looks like a unicorn horn. Then I started thinking about painting the rock candy with gold disco dust and how cool that would look. As I was sketching out the set up and thinking about rainbows it hit me like a whack to a pinata…paint the rock candy rainbow! I searched and searched online and couldn’t find anything like what I had in mind anywhere. Having an original idea is truly like finding a unicorn…and it’s the best feeling! The last time I had felt this excited about an original party food idea was when I created the Melted Olaf Greek yogurt idea. I could;n’t wait to get started!

Here is what you are going to need to create your rainbow rock candy:

These are optional but I really liked the extra sparkle the disco dust added:

You want to create “paint” with the vodka and dust so place about a 1/2 tablespoon of vodka in one of your bowls and then add the pearl dust. Mix well. You don’t want it to be too watery since you are going to paint with it. If you are using disco dust add that and mix again. With a small paint brush start painting the rock candy from the top down. If your mixture starts to dry up add a little more vodka. Don’t overdue it though because you will end up wasting a lot of pearl and disco dust. Little bits at a time.

Once you have two layers done go back and blend them together with your paint brush to make a more seamless transition.

*I had photos of each step but they have since disappeared. I will work on recreating them for you though.

If you are going to make unicorn horns snip the sticks off first, turn upside down, and paint the small end first.

Let dry in a wax paper lined cookie sheet for several hours. Once they have dried completely you can place in cellophane for party favors if you like. Store in a ziploc bag with bubble wrap so they don’t crack.

I placed the rock candy unicorn horns in a tray with Sixlets and set up the table for little guests to enjoy. P.S. They make a glass of champagne really fun!
